25 empty match boxes,
paper fastners
pva
paper
pencil
ruler
coloured card
• To make this, you'll need 25 empty matchboxes. We've gone for the big ones but you can use any size.
• Stick all of the matchboxes together with PVA glue. You need to stick them so that there are five columns and five rows, like this.
• Take the block of matchboxes and lie it flat on a piece of paper. Draw around it so that you have a rectangular shape. The shape should be about 34cm long and 13cm tall.
• Put the box back in place and make a mark between each of the matchboxes on each side.
• Join up the dots to make a grid that looks like this.
• Now you can draw the Christmas picture of your choice. The design is up to you, but make sure it fills every square of the grid.
• If you like, you could copy or print off one of our designs. Just click the one you want to open it up in a new window at the right size for printing out.
• If the print comes out on two pages, just stick them together. Then place the matchboxes over the design and draw the grid over the top.
• Download the images here, here and here.
• Colour in and then cut up the design by carefully using a pair of scissors. Be as accurate as you can!
• Do each square one by one, in order. Stick the pieces onto the matchboxes, also in order, so that you recreate the picture. You may need to trim them to make them fit exactly.
• Cover the remaining sides of the matchboxes with coloured card or paper.
• Now turn each of the drawers around and add a paper fastener for a handle. Also, draw a number (from 1 to 25) on each.
• Randomize the position of each drawer - to make them more fun to find!
• The design only works one way round, so turning the matchboxes round doesn't reveal the finished picture!
• To make the calendar really fun, why not add a small present or treat to each drawer.
• If you can only find small matchboxes, why not make a mini version of the Finger Tips advent calendar, like this.
